Trusted partners in a changing world: Senex at the Australia – Korea Business Council Joint Meeting

Senex Energy CEO Darren Stevenson joined more than 200 delegates from Australia and Korea last week for the Australia-Korea Business Council Joint Meeting in Adelaide.

Now in its 47th year, the meeting is one of the biggest dates on the Australia-Korea business calendar.

Senior leaders from business, government and industry across both nations came together under the theme ‘Trusted partners in a changing world’.

Gas, growth and partnership

Darren Stevenson presented to delegates on the role of gas in the energy transition. Three takeaways from his speech include:

  • Gas and renewables are partners, not competitors. Batteries manage short-term swings in supply and gas steps in when renewable output falls short. The future energy system is not renewables or gas. It is renewables and gas.
  • Energy security is now inseparable from national security. The Australia-Korea relationship shows what trusted, long-term energy partnerships can deliver.
  • The relationship runs both ways. Australian gas has helped power Korea’s industrial growth for decades, while Korean investment, including POSCO International’s stake in Senex, has helped build Australia’s production capacity in return.

Darren also joined a panel on the energy transition, decarbonisation and emerging technologies alongside other energy leaders.

A vote of confidence in Queensland gas

A large delegation from Senex’s majority shareholder, POSCO International, attended the meeting, including POSCO Group Chairman Chang In-hwa.

As a majority shareholder, POSCO International brings global energy expertise and scale to Senex’s Surat Basin operations.

It is a strong vote of confidence in the company’s future and a textbook example of the Australia-Korea partnership at work.
