First gas flows from Senex’s Queensland Atlas expansion

Australian manufacturers and households can count on reliable natural gas from Senex’s Atlas Queensland expansion with first gas now flowing to market.

The announcement of ‘first gas’ marks a significant milestone in delivering critical gas to the east coast market at a time when the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is predicting shortfalls in coming years.

Senex CEO Darren Stevenson said that first gas was a timely delivery of its promise to customers on Australia’s east coast given the current pressures the energy system is experiencing, particularly in southern states.

“The flow of natural gas from our Atlas expansion is a win for Queensland, a win for energy security, and a win for a market that needs reliable natural gas to flow to factories and households,’ said Mr Stevenson.

Certainty for manufacturers and households

Australian manufacturers are now receiving the reliable gas they need to produce products like bricks, steel and glass that we rely on every day in our modern lives.

Gas is an irreplaceable fuel providing around 40 per cent of energy used for Australian manufacturing and helps to drive its $100 billion industry that employs 1.3 million people.

Senex customer Orora’s state-of-the-art glass manufacturing facility in South Australia has begun receiving reliable and secure natural gas as part of its decade-long gas supply deal with Senex Energy.

As a leading provider of sustainable glass packaging for customers across the food and beverage industry, Senior Vice President Asia-Pacific for Orora’s global glass business, Greg Savage said the ten-year gas supply deal was essential for its manufacturing operations.

“This secure and long-term gas supply supports Orora’s interim goal to achieve a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2019 levels by 2035*,” Mr Savage said.

“While we have implemented new technologies such as our oxygen fuelled furnace at our Gawler Plant in South Australia, we continue to need gas in our energy mix.”

Energy security a win for everyone

Senex CEO Darren Stevenson said Senex’s $1 billion expansion project has delivered an economic boost to Australia with 95 per cent of the $1 billion project spent within the country and almost half directed to Queensland.

“The investment is creating nearly 1,000 jobs, a $200 million injection into local businesses and communities as well as millions in royalties paid from this multi-decade investment helping fund hospitals, roads, and emergency services

“The continued delivery of Senex’s $1 billion expansion project demonstrates what can be achieved when our team, industry, government, regulators, landholders, community and suppliers all work together to deliver essential energy for life.
